PF (Phthalate-Free) Artificial Leathers. One of the ingredients widespreadly used in the production of Polyvinyl Chloride based artificial leather is an organic component called phthalate. From many chemically different types of phthalates, some are available to use for artificial leather production and DEHP (di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate) – or also called DOP (dioctly phthalate) – recognized as most commonly known and used one. The usage of phthalates is currently being controlled or regulated within European Union. Under REACH regulations, 5 different types of phthalates are listed in SVHC (Substance of Very High Concern) list, including DEHP (DOP). Substances are marked as SVHC for one or more of following reasons: - It is carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction; - It is persistent, bioaccumalative or toxic according to the criteria set out in Annex XIII to the REACH Regulation (PBT substances); - It is very persistent and very bioaccumulative according to the criteria set out in Annex XIII to the REACH Regulation (vPvB substances); - There is scientific evidence of probable serious effects to human health or the environment. Listing of a substance as an SVHC is considered as the first step in the procedure for restriction of use of a chemical. It is expected, that usage of phthalates in SVHC list will be limited or restricted in a near future. For a wide angle of products, quantitative analysis of phthalate content is tested by many different accredited test companies nowadays, and some standards like Oekotex 100 even limit the usage of phthalates not listed in SVHC list. Driven by our responsibility to human health and environment we have taken a radical decision, a first in our competitive sector: Removing phtlatates in SVHC list completely out of our products.
